Jon Ashford was forced to defend statements he made in a leaked recording where he criticised Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. The Labour MP insisted it was all “banter” when he spoke to Tory

activist and former friend Greig Baker. BBC’s Politics Live host Jo Coburn said: “This was a private conversation you had with a friend of yours and you’ve described it just as banter, is

that right?” Mr Ashworth replied: “He is a Tory activist, Greig Baker. “I was talking to him and he said his sources suspect it’s doing well. “I was doing the whole football manager thing

trying to psych him out saying, ‘no, you’re going to win. Don’t worry about it'.” The Financial Times Laura Hughes question the MP on why he would attempt such a risky tactic.

this is their message, we can see from the polling that it is working for them, so why would you want that to continue with it.” Mr Ashworth replied: “I’m just trying to kind of lull them

into a false sense of security. “In the cold light of day, it is obviously stupid alright. Jo Coburn added viewers will have to come to their own conclusions as to whether they believe it to

be true or not. Iain Dale then said: “I will say one thing in your defence, Jon. “This guy, Greig Baker, what an utter s***.”
