Fans of the critically acclaimed CW series Jane the Virgin may recognize Justin Baldoni as the handsome heartthrob who has been vying for Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) heart since its first season

– and while acting on a hit TV show is a dream come true, the 32-year-old actor says filmmaking is his true passion. The admission makes sense considering the fan-favorite star – who has

directed a bevy of commercials and music videos throughout his career – is premiering the second season of his three-part docu-series, _My Last Days_, on the CW this Wednesday, Thursday and

Friday. _My Last Days_ spotlights six individuals with terminal illnesses, whose zest for life will inspire viewers to rethink how they live their own lives. “It’s a show about living told

by those who are dying in an effort to prove that you don’t have to find out you’re dying to start living,” Baldoni tells PEOPLE. “Don’t wait to take on your bucket list because you don’t

know … tomorrow is not guaranteed.” The sophomore compilation of mini documentaries, which was just green-lit for an additional season, is airing on TV for the first time after season 1

found a home on YouTube back in 2012. In collaboration with _The Office_ alum and good friend Rainn Wilson – who founded SoulPancake, a digital platform “that explores life’s big questions”

– Baldoni debuted the first season of _My Last Days_ on Wilson’s company’s YouTube channel, a move that eventually inspired Baldoni to launch his own production company, Wayfarer

Entertainment. “The whole mission is to create content that helps us remember how beautiful life is and connects to our viewers’ hearts,” he says of his venture. As for what Baldoni has

taken away from working on _My Last Days_? The actor-director says he has an “a-ha” moment every single time he shoots a documentary, but a specific conversation he had with featured cast

member Zach Sobiech from season 1 will forever be ingrained in his memory. While gearing up to propose to his now-wife Emily, the _Jane the Virgin_ star expressed his nerves to Sobiech and

girlfriend Amy, fearing that he was too young and not financially sound enough to get married. Zach, who was 18 years old at the time, responded without hesitation: “Do it. I wish I could

marry Amy.” “If it was up to Zach, he’d drop everything right now to be able to live an extra five years so he could marry and have kids with his girlfriend,” Baldoni recalls. “He told me

‘It’s not always going to be easy, Justin, but it’s the hard times that make life beautiful.’ ” “Every single character in season 1 and 2 taught me something very unique just like that,” he

tells PEOPLE. “There’s a different thing to distill from each of them.” Watch _My Last Days_ on the CW this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Aug. 17-19, at 9 p.m.
