Canned tuna from four different brands was recalled over concerns that the pull-tab lid on cans may not seal properly, potentially leading to leaks or contamination that could cause

botulism, a serious foodborne illness.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled products. Still, the supplier, Tri-Union Seafoods, said in a statement it initiated the recall as a precaution to ensure

consumer safety.

Symptoms of botulism

Botulism is a rare but serious illness that attacks the nerves, leading to muscle paralysis, breathing difficulties, and even death. The toxin responsible, Clostridium botulinum, can

develop in food, wounds and the intestines. Symptoms of botulism include trouble swallowing, muscle weakness, double vision, drooping eyelids, blurry vision, slurred speech, and difficulty

breathing or moving the eyes. Foodborne botulism may also cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhea, according to the CDC. Symptoms may appear within hours or take several days to

develop, says the Cleveland Clinic, and without treatment, it can spread throughout the body.
