birminghammail.co.uk11:15, 05 Jun 2025Updated 17:47, 05 Jun 2025Extra security measures on the way for Birmingham park after Travellers set up camp multiple times The council is looking to
install extra preventions at a popular family park following a string of Traveller incursions.
Convoys of caravans and vehicles have set up camps on fields on Swanshurst Park, on the borders of Moseley and Billseley, at least four times this year, including over the Bank Holidays.
Each time, the public have been unable to use sections of the park and the council left with legal bills for evictions.

The issue of barriers, impact and left-over mess was raised at the Moseley Ward meeting attended by 35 people and the Interim Head of Parks on Wednesday (June 4).
Councillor Izzy Knowles said the council would be checking the progress of security measures designed to prevent vehicles being driven onto the park and would be "escalating if necessary."

enhanced and the section where drivers are gaining access will be secured.
"Unfortunately, traveller groups will continue to find ways to access parks and open spaces.
"Whilst the council has no suitable alternative sites for them to be directed to, the police are reluctant to use their powers to move them on.
"This means we are in a constant merry go round of traveller groups staying at unsuitable sites for five days before being evicted and re-appearing somewhere else.
"It is especially frustrating that the cost of bailiffs, eviction orders and clearing up is money that would be better spent on our parks, playgrounds and open spaces."
The Friends of Swanshurst Park, a volunteer-run group, posted on Facebook: "I know that many of you have been concerned about the recent frequent occupation of Swanshurst Park by groups of
travellers.
"Be assured that I have been working hard on your behalf to rectify this situation.
"I have been in discussion with the Parks Manager for the past couple of weeks and have been assured that measures to further secure the Park will take place in the next couple of weeks.

"Please continue to enjoy the Park and all it has to offer and do attend our next event on Sunday June 22 - Birdfest. It’s going to be a great day."
