THE CRYSTAL PALACE DEFENDER HIS HIGH ON NEWCASTLE'S TRANSFER WISHLIST THIS SUMMER 14:20, 02 Jun 2025 Marc Guehi's rise through the footballing ranks from Chelsea 'reject'
to England star has been phenomenal. The Crystal Palace defender has shot to fame with a series of excellent displays for the Eagles, earning international recognition in the process.
It's no surprise he is at the top of Newcastle United's summer wishlist once again, with the Magpies reportedly ready to meet Palace's asking price amid fierce competition
from Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool. The 24-year-old came through the academy ranks at Stamford Bridge, but left without making a Premier League appearances for the London side. However,
his career has blossomed at Selhurst Park, with his abilities recognised by former England manager Gareth Southgate. The Ivory Coast-born defender was first called up on 2022, and his has
since gone on to establish himself as a first choice centre-back for last summer's EURO24 campaign. Newcastle have long admired Guehi, but were not able to strike a deal for the
defender last summer, despite drawn out negotiations with Palace. A fee could not be agreed in 2024, but with his contract due to expire next summer, the Eagles are thought to be more open
to a deal, with a £50m fee suggested. United are looking for a long-term central defensive partner for Dutch star Sven Botman, with Fabian Schar and Dan Burn both the wrong side of 30,
although the pair have again shone for Newcastle in the season just gone. Squad rotation is likely to be key for Eddie Howe in the coming campaign, and so he will have take note of
Guehi's recent comments following his exclusion from an England starting XI. New manager Thomas Tuchel opted to hand Burn his England debut in March, alongside Aston Villa's Ezri
Konas, with Guehi selected for the game against Latvia several days later. However, far from being downbeat at being overlooked for Tuchel's first game in charge of the Three Lions,
Guehi used it as motivation to improve. Article continues below “It’s part of football,” he said following the Albania match. “Obviously disappointed, but we’ve got a lot of good
centre-backs. Dan has been doing extremely well at Newcastle, Ezri has been playing well. Levi Colwill obviously didn’t get on. “It just means I need to work a lot harder to make sure the
manager sees me in his plans. Not pressure, just motivation. “It’s a job well done, with three points and a clean sheet against Latvia. It’s difficult, these games. I know they seem easy on
the eye, but it’s good for us to build upon and hopefully improve game by game.” Those words will be music to Howe's ears as he looks to get a deal over the line. United will have done
their homework on their key transfer targets, so it will have been no surprise to hear him speak of improvements and future targets. The Newcastle head coach has a strong reputation for
developing player, even those already well established, such as Joelinton, Jacob Murphy and Fabian Schar, so Guehi underlining his willingness to improve illustrates how he would fit in to
the United ethos. Guehi is not in the current England squad after he suffered a suspected fractured eye socket in Palace's FA Cup Final win over Manchester City. Tuchel is believed to
have spoken to the defender to explain he didn't want to risk further injury following the Wembley blow. England face Andorra in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday (June 7) before taking
on Senegal in friendly at Nottingham Forest's City Ground on Tuesday, June 10. _Here at ChronicleLive, we are dedicated to bringing you the best NEWCASTLE UNITED coverage and
