The 18th annual AFI Awards list of the best TV shows of 2017 are out, and among the usual suspects — awards season-wise — is one somewhat surprising entry: NBC’s The Good Place. In fact, the

Peacock got all of the broadcast love from AFI this year as its This Is Us also made the list of 10 “culturally and artistically significant” programs.

The Good Place picked up a Critics’ Choice Award for Most Exciting New Series for its freshman season last year but went unnoticed by the Emmys and Golden Globes. This Is Us, on the other

hand, was a favorite at the Emmys in September and many other trophy shows since its fall 2016 debut.

HBO and Netflix each grabbed three slots on the AFI list — Emmy winners Big Little Lies and Game Of Thrones and Issa Rae’s Insecure (HBO) as well as hit Stranger Things, The Crown and Master

Of None (Netflix) —  to go with NBC’s two, leaving precious few slots for other networks. Hulu’s Emmy-laden The Handmaid’s Tale and FX’s Feud: Bette and Joan also made the cut.

The Vietnam War, PBS’ sprawling documentary miniseries from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, scored an AFI Special Award.

If you notice some big names missing from this top 10, note that it’s sometimes tough to compare the AFI winners to other trophy shows because of the eligibility windows. But that’s not the

case for HBO’s Veep — the four-time defending Emmy champ — and AMC’s Better Call Saul, which are among the high-profile snubs.
