japanese architecture practice noriyoshi morimura has completed ‘katsurazaka house’, a single family residence in kyoto, japan. the solution to a neighborhood trend of monotonous housing due
to strict building regulations, this dwelling’s dominant roof form contains the living, dining and sleeping quarters. positioned on a corner lot, the east side of the roof structure is
enclosed with a glass facade unveiling views of the city to inhabitants while the southern elevation is opaque to block urban sounds and views through to the interior.
an open ground floor surfaced with concrete is opened with a ceiling void to the upper level, entirely clad with wood boards. warm colored wooden risers guides individuals to the combined
living and dining space presenting dramatic views of the urban landscape. a dark red hued wood is contrasted with the exposed framing elements made from light colored pine.
