and two minor girls who had eloped to Kolkata on May 1 recently returned to Bangalore. The boys told police that a former bar girl had helped them run away with the promise of arranging

their marriage to the girls in Nepal, her native country. Thirty-three-year old Shamita allegedly took Manja (22), his younger brother Raju K (a 16-year-old diploma student), Kamal (a Class

10 student), Sahana (14) and Anusha (13) to Kolkata. Shamita, Manja and Raju are neighbours in Laggere; Raju and Kamal are friends; Sahana and Anusha are Shamita’s nieces (daughters of the

sister of Shamita’s husband, Navaroj). On May 3 Kamal’s mother, Kamakshi, filed a missing complaint about him at Shivajinagar police station. She told police Kamal was missing from

Shivajinagar, where he had gone on April 29 to stay with his grandparents. He had left his grandparents’ house on May 1 and told them he would be going home after watching a film. As part of

their investigations, police questioned some friends of Manja in Laggere and learnt about the elopement plan. Some of the friends later sent an SMS to Manja in Kolkata, saying that police

was on the case. Manja, Raju and Kamal got scared when they learnt that police was looking for them. On May 12, they returned to Bangalore by train. After their return, the pieces of the

puzzle fell into place. Shamita was allegedly into a relationship with Manja, who bore the expenses of the trip to Kolkata. Sahana had got married two months ago, but apparently did not like

her husband and preferred Raju. Police said Anusha had been in love with Kamal for many months. On May 1, all six had gone to Majestic and taken a bus to Tirupati. From there, they had

boarded a train to Kolkata. Surprisingly, they did not stay in a hotel or lodge in Kolkata. Instead they spent five days and nights there in and around the Howrah Bridge. _(Some names have
