Anil Modagil, 45, was arrested by the Santa Cruz police for allegedly raping a 46-year-old woman repeatedly and extorting money by threatening to make public her photograph in compromising
position. It took a woman over four years to muster the courage to file a police complaint against her husband’s colleague who had not only been sexually abusing her but also extorting money
from her. Anil Modagil, 45, was arrested by the Santa Cruz police for allegedly raping a 46-year-old woman repeatedly and extorting money by threatening to make public her photograph in
compromising position, police said. Modagil, working as an assistant in the confidential branch of the railway department in Mumbai, had been sexually abusing the victim since 2007. The
victim has a son and her husband is also a railway employee, the police said. According to the police, Modagil, who is married and stays in the railway quarters, had allegedly taken
photographs of the victim in a compromising position when he first sexually exploited her. “He started to threaten her that he would show the pictures to her husband and others if she did
not obey his orders,” a police officer from Santa Cruz police station said, “He started regularly visiting her house when she was alone and raped her multiple times. He also reportedly
extorted money from her. After several years of harassment, the victim finally broke down and registered a police complaint.” Senior inspector Madhukar Choudhary said Modagil had bought a
flat for which he needed money. “He extorted about Rs4.50 lakh from the victim over a period of time. The victim and accused have been staying in the same colony for over five years.”
Choudhary said that Modagil has been booked under sections 376 (rape), 384 (extortion) and 385 (putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion) of the Indian Penal Code. “We
will soon be searching Modagil’s house to get the objectionable photographs of the victim. Also, we have to investigate where he spent the money and have to recover the same,” a police
officer said.
