A draft law in Chinaseeks to bring down noisepollution. The law authorisesmunicipal authorities tocrack down on everythingfrom deafening constructionsites to boisterous folk dancing. Some
big cities are planning to build noise screensalongside major highwayswhere decibel levels exceedsafety levels, said GuoXiulan, a senior engineerwith the National Environmental Protection
Agency. Noise pollution is gettingworse with urbanisation andindustrial development. Onsome highways, noise levelsexceed 70 decibels. Any noisebeyond 60 decibels can causephysical
discomfort. Existingnoise pollution laws have notproved to be effective. Thenew law provides stringentrules for the assessment ofnoise impact from varioussources, including dailychores,
traffic and construction sites. Noise controlmeasures would also apply tocinema halls, karaoke clubsand discos. Inspectors assessing noise levels are likely tobe sued if their findings
arefound to be inaccurate.
