the Delhi government has asked for special exemption from getting environment impact assessment (eia) certificates for all construction related to the Commonwealth Games slated for 2010. The
state government's submission is that getting eia certificates for each project will delay putting in place the infrastructure for the games and make it difficult to meet deadlines.
Chief minister Sheila Dikshit has written to the Union ministry of environment and forests asking for the exemption. According to reports, she has requested the ministry to rationalise
guidelines as a special case, if exemptions can't be granted. It is mandatory for all construction projects costing over Rs 50 crore (including the value of land) or planned for at
least 1,000 people or with a projected discharge of more than 50,000 litres of sewage a day to undertake eias. So far, only the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has got an eia waiver.
