Lara Giddings said Ms Goodwin needs to put resources into modernising IT systems to prevent prisoners from being incorrectly released.
The call for action comes after Ms Goodwin announced on Friday that seven inmates were incorrectly released from prison in the past two years.
A 25-year-old inmate at Risdon Prison was released early by mistake in February and was not re-imprisoned until July.
“Having prisoners at large when they should be behind bars, especially for such long periods, undermines everyone's confidence in the system and erodes public safety,” Ms Giddings said.
Another inmate was released nearly five months after his sentence expired.
“Tasmanians are right to ask when the secrecy and cover-ups will end,” Ms Giddings said. “Seven early releases in two years shows that staff and our prison system are stressed under this
government.”
On Friday Ms Goodwin said information released under Right to Information confirmed on seven occasions a prisoner was released on the incorrect date, with all cases the result of an
administrative error. The government has established a centralised Sentence Administration Unit which will oversee sentence calculations, the section 42 leave program and remand orders, and
calculating release dates.
Community and Public Sector Union secretary Tom Lynch said the early and late releasing was unacceptable.
“I welcome the changes that the minister has put in place to address this, but I have some doubts there is sufficient funding available to make sure the systems between the prisons, the
courts and community corrections are up to standard to make sure mistakes like this don’t happen,” he said.
“This should never have happened but now we are aware that this has happened I think everyone would be in support of ensuring the systems are foolproof.”
