pleaded guilty to possess a controlled substance on March 19, 2024.

Police prosecutor Taylor Hay said that a grey Mazda, in which Young was a passenger, was intercepted on the Bass Highway at Turners Beach west of Devonport.

"In a search of the vehicle a ziplock bag of methylamphetamine was located in the defendant's pants," Ms Hay said.

The ziplock bag contained 21.62 grams of the controlled substance.

She said Young told police that he smoked the drug regularly and used "way more" than a point [0.1 of a gram] every day.

Defence lawyer Hannah Phillips said Young was using a significant amount of methylamphetamine at the time.

She said that while not completely clean he had reduced his usage considerably.

Ms Phillips said Young was shot twice to the chest in July and an accused person had subsequently appeared in court.

"One of the pellets was found a centimetre from his heart," Ms Phillips said.

"It was a huge wake-up call to him, and he has changed the associates he hangs around with," she said.

She said Young had used drugs for about four years, beginning after a series of family tragedies.

"His life is back on track now and not being around his old associates has been of benefit to him," she said.

She said the seized drugs had been for personal use.

Magistrate Simon Brown said it was a relatively significant amount of the damaging drug and an important sentencing factor was the need to deter both Young and others from possessing the

drug.

He fined him $1000.

On July 16 Mr Young pleaded not guilty to an alleged kidnapping and aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and assault in Punchbowl on June 14, 2024. He was allegedly one of three men

involved.

He was bailed from the Launceston Magistrates Court and was shot two days later in George Town on July 18.
