A much-loved community venue has launched an urgent appeal after "extensive damage” was discovered in the roof. Sitting in the heart of Newsome is the Newsome Centre - a community
facility with ancillary café that has been brought to the former St John The Evangelist Church. The venue, located at Jackroyd Lane, hosts musical performances, seated pilates classes and
weekly coffee and cake, among other events. The centre was already undergoing work due to the condition of its vestry roof but now, contractors have uncovered more extensive damage than
anticipated as the tiles were removed. This has pushed costs up by several thousands of pounds. Chair of the Newsome Centre Management Committee and Leader of Kirklees' Green group,
Cllr Andrew Cooper, explained: “Work is cracking on with getting the vestry roof repaired. We’ve got to preserve the building for the community. It’s important. The bad news is that it’s
going to cost us an additional £3,500. “The reason for that is the damage they uncovered was much greater than expected and so if you can help us by supporting our crowdfunder, it would be
really appreciated. We’ve got another £5,000 to raise to hit our target so if you can help us with that, we’d be very grateful.” A link to the fundraiser can be found here. _GET ALL THE
