Ron Russell, 81, mislaid the black leather billfold in 1962 but the person who found it forgot to hand it in to police – until it turned up in a recent spring clean. Ron, who is in a nursing
home near his house in Hull, had never reported the wallet missing – but police decided to track him down anyway. Following clues from photos and papers inside, officers soon discovered it
belonged to the father of six. His wife Pauline, 78, said: “We thought that was missing for good years ago. It really is a blast from the past to see all these belongings now. We can’t even
remember how he lost it.” The wallet yielded a good few clues to the identity of its owner, a former Royal Marine and Hartley’s Jam worker. There were photographs of Mr Russell with two of
his sons and fellow Marines, and a letter from Hartley’s –confirming his employment and £700 salary. There were also pictures and papers connected to his work with his local kennel club.
Pauline added: “The picture of the young boys are our two sons, Phillip and Geoffrey, who were aged just seven and four at the time, but they look a little different now. “Phillip is now 54
so the picture would not really have helped trace him. “They are with Ron, who was in his mid 30s and was quite dashing back then.” She added: “Some of the photographs were of friends he had
when he was a corporal in the Marines.” Mark Holland, property officer for Humberside Police, said: “It’s great to get this back to the owner because it had sentimental value.”
