Prince Philip was transported to King Edward VII hospital in central London on Friday, with Buckingham Palace issuing a statement confirming the Duke of Edinburgh is being treated as a
"precautionary measure." Philip was expected to reunite with the Queen at Sandringham ahead of Christmas after Her Majesty travelled to King's Lynn after her last engagement
delivering the Queen's Speech on Thursday but was instead taken to London because of a "pre-existing" condition. While the Palace has yet to confirm when and if the Duke will
be returning to Norfolk, ITV News royal editor Chris Ship said sources appeared to jokingly suggest Philip would prefer to spend some time "alone" in hospital then face the
excitement of bringing a large group of Royal Family members together for the holidays. Speaking to 7 News, Mr Ship said: "Some people have suggested to me the Duke of Edinburgh would
quite like Christmas on his own in hospital rather than with the family. "However, I think if they can get him back to Sandringham for the Christmas period, then I think they would do
that." In a statement issued on Friday, Buckingham Palace said: "The Duke of Edinburgh travelled from Norfolk this morning to the King Edward VII Hospital in London for observation
and treatment in relation to a pre-existing condition. "The admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’ Doctor.” JUST IN: MEGHAN MARKLE NEWS: JUSTIN
TRUDEAU’S TOUCHING CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FOR DUKE AND DUCHESS OF SUSSEX The Duke was originally believed to have been driven from Norfolk to the London hospital but later reports revealed Prince
Philip was flown out of Sandringham into the capital. Royal sources told the Daily Mail Philip "had a bad fall" recently which had left him bed-bound. The Duke has been described
in the past as "tough as an ox" but was previously admitted to hospital on two occasions over the past couple of years, once in 2012 with a bladder infection and again in 2018 to
undergo hip surgery. The sources also suggested Philip has been battling a flu-like condition over the past few days and described him as "increasingly frail". READ MORE: FEARS
GROW FOR DUKE AS IT'S REVEALED HE WAS HELICOPTERED TO HOSPITAL But with the Queen said to be ploughing ahead with Christmas planning ahead of Royal Family members arriving in
Sandringham, the Duke of Edinburgh is expected to be heading home over the next couple of days. Her Majesty is also expected to be eager to reunited with the Duke after spending their 72nd
wedding anniversary in November apart because of her busy agenda. The Queen and Prince Philip met aged 13 and 18 respectively while the princess visited Royal Naval College in Dartmouth with
her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, in 1939. Prince Philip asked formal permission to marry then-Princess Elizabeth in 1946 and the pair tied the knot on November 20, 1947. The
couple welcomed their first child, Prince Charles, in 1948 and their only daughter, Princess Anne, in 1950. Their youngest sons, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, were later added to the
Royal Family in 1960 and 1964.
