Richard Brittain, 29, from Bedford, was convicted and jailed after he travelled 400 miles to attack Paige Rolland at the Asda store where she worked in Fife, Scotland in October 2014. He
pleaded guilty to the attack and served 30 months in jail from December 2015. But he claims in a blog post that he heard voices in prison claiming that he "is the devil" and
believes that he suffers from psychosis. Brittain said he only heard the voice after he was attacked by a fellow prisoner in jail. He said that the same voice urged him to stare directly at
the Sun for several days - which he did because it had instructed him too. Brittain was also pleaded guilty to stalking Ella Durant, a university classmate, on Instagram and Twitter.
During sentencing, the judge described him as a “serious danger to women.” He was also given an indefinite non- harassment order, which meant he was barred from contacting either woman. The
gameshow contestant, who was the 2006 winner of the Countdown television series exposed his thoughts in a blog called “Putting New Wine in New Bottles”. He was given the writing gig when he
was released after 15 months in Perth Prison earlier this year. In the blog, he claims to have found God and describes watching the TV series Dexter, which is about a serial killer. He adds
that the attack by the prisoner triggered a psychotic episode. He wrote: “I was only subjected to violence on one occasion, when I was momentarily strangled by a psychotic inmate for no
obvious reason. “This triggered some sort of psychosis in me, as I got a voice in the head telling me that I was the devil. “The voice later told me to stare directly at the sun, which I did
for several days.”
