Health and safety zealots say staff should not be exposed to noise of more than 80 decibels for fear of damaging their hearing. As some instruments can reach 140 decibels the Health and
Safety Executive has advised teachers to shield themselves from potentially dangerous sound waves. Protective screens were recommended by the HSE as part of a “noise control strategy” for
schools. Teachers were warned not to put the screens anywhere the noise might reverberate back to the child.
