The horror incident happened at the Cauvery canal in Karnataka this morning. Local news reports say most of the victims are believed to be school children. They also report that the only
survivor is a boy who jumped from the vehicle at the last minute. He is said to be “in a state of shock”. Among those confirmed to be dead is a woman and a small child. Images of the
distressing scene show men standing on the fully submerged yellow bus hours after a failed rescue operation holding ropes in an attempt to get the vehicle out of the canal. Also pictured is
a large crowd, who appear to have gathered to help. Police have launched an investigation into what happened. Local politician CM G Parameshwara said: “25 people have died. I believe the
driver was not driving properly, I will find out. “There is no clarity on the number of deaths as all those who were inside the bus have died.” Senior politicians in India have taken to
social media to mourn the victims. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter: "Deeply pained the bus accident in Karnataka’s Mandya. My thoughts are with the families of the
deceased. May God give them strength in this hour of sadness." Rahul Gandhi added: "I'm sorry to hear about the terrible bus accident in Mandya district of Karnataka in which
over 20 people are feared dead & many others injured. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased & pray for the speedy recovery of the injured." Mandya is
105km from the city of Bengalaru, located south of the country.
