Anxiang Du, 53, was detained in Tangiers on Saturday afternoon following a 15-month international manhunt.
Jifeng Ding, his wife Helen Chui and their two daughters Alice, 12, and Xing, 18, were found stabbed to death at their home in Wootton, near Northampton, in April.
Police said they would apply to extradite Du. He was involved in a herbal business with Ms Chui, 47, until a dispute broke out over money.
Officers asked British tourists to look out for Du and released CCTV images. They believe he fled across Europe to north Africa via Gibraltar.
A police spokeswoman said: “The authorities believe a visit by detectives to Madrid earlier in the week played a significant part in the suspect’s apprehension.”
