The 40-year-old has played Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional detective since 2010 in the hit BBC series. In an interview with the Radio Times, Benedict said his mother, actress Wanda
Ventham, found him to be a bit short with her during filming. The actor said: “There is a kickback. I do get affected by it. "There’s a sense of being impatient. My mum says I’m much
curter with her when I’m filming Sherlock.” However, Wanda, 81, is fairly well versed with how intense the show can be as she and Benedict's father, Timothy Carlton, starred as
Sherlock's parents for two episodes in series three. Benedict went on to tease fans about what they could expect from the upcoming series, promising "very bleak" moments. He
continued: “There are payoffs in this series that I know in some instances even the writers didn’t realise were happening until they were starting to write it, which is just remarkable. “The
level of invention and imagination and darkness and joy just gets better and better. “There’s a lot of very serious stuff, and it’s very bleak at times. But the writers also manage to do
something very funny as well.” READ THE FULL INTERVIEW WITH BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH IN THIS WEEK'S RADIO TIMES, OUT NOW. _SHERLOCK SERIES FOUR BEGINS ON NEW YEARS DAY AT 8.30PM ON BBC
