The county looks set to be in for a very wet and showery day ahead on Saturday (June 7), with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms lasting from the morning until
the evening, potentially leading to disruption to both transport and infrastructure. The yellow warning covers much of the south of England between 9am and 6pm. During this period, the Met
Office has warned lightning strikes could lead to building and infrastructure damage, short term power cuts are "likely" and delays to journey time both on roads and trains should
be expected. Met Office Chief Meteorologist Dan Suri said: "Frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected for much of Saturday, before they fade from the west during the
mid-to-late afternoon. "It's possible that 10-15mm of rain could fall in less than an hour, while some places could see 30-40mm of rain over several hours from successive showers
and thunderstorms. Frequent lightning, hail, and strong, gusty winds are also possible." In Surrey, rain is expected across the county from the late-morning and lasting until the
evening. In areas such as Guildford, Woking Reigate, Dorking, Staines, Walton-on-Thames, Godstone and Haslemere; rain should be expected to start at around 12pm, but may begin sooner in some
areas. While temperatures will sit at around 15C for much of the day, it is unlikely residents of the county will be outside to experience this, unless they are prepared to get very wet. By
1pm, the heavy showers and thundery weather will be moving towards its peak for the weekend. Gusts of winds nearing 30mph should be expected during this time, continuing until the evening.
The pinnacle of the possible thunderstorms will come in areas such as Woking, Staines, Dorking and Guildford, as well as much of the county by around 2pm. This period is when some of the
most extreme thundery weather will likely hit Surrey, with a possibility of "lightning, hail, and strong, gusty winds" continuing from the early afternoon. The heaviest showers of
the day have been forecast from 2pm until 5pm, according to the Met Office. The majority of the county will see heavy, dark rain clouds in their skies, accompanied by heavy downpours. While
rain is forecast across the county - some areas, such as Reigate, Staines, Walton-on-Thames, and Godstone can expect some fairly sunny weather alongside the showers. Wind gusts will reduce
to below 20mph by around 6pm, marking the end of 'the worst of it' in terms of weather for Saturday. The Met Office predicts that the peak of the thundery weather will continue
until around 6pm, by which point light rain will follow for a few more hours before being predicted to stop at 8pm in Surrey. During the early evening, cloudy but sunny weather is forecast
by the Met Office for Surrey, in areas such as Staines and Godstone, this somewhat-sunny weather has been predicted to start even earlier, at around 3pm; ending, alongside much of the
county, by sunset at 9pm. Here is the Met Office advice for how to prepare for thunderstorms: * Check your location for risk of flash flooding and have a flood plan and emergency kit in
place * Avoid delays by checking road, rail, air and sea conditions before travelling. Consider timetables before heading out * Power cuts could impact homes and businesses so make sure to
have torches, batteries and a mobile phone power bank * Take cover from thunder and lightning by getting into an enclosed shelter like a building or car. Do not shelter under trees and take
lower ground * When driving take main roads which may be less likely to be affected by debris, flooding and branches * Grip steering wheels firmly while driving and give large, high sided
vehicles a wide berth
