WASHINGTON — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission voted today to allow the restart of Three Mile Island’s undamaged reactor, which has been shut down since the nation’s worst commercial nuclear
accident in March, 1979. Despite protests by Pennsylvania Gov. Dick Thornburgh and anti-nuclear groups, the commission voted 4 to 1 to allow plant operator General Public Utilities Corp. to
reactivate TMI’s Unit No. 1 reactor. The sole dissenter was Commissioner James Asselstine, who said too many questions remained unanswered about the company to justify authorizing restart.
