A wealthy civic activist won an upset victory over Delaware’s lieutenant governor in a Democratic primary election for the right to challenge a Republican incumbent in the U.S. Senate. With
97% or 330 of the 339 precincts reporting, Samuel S. Beard had 22,418 votes, or 53%, to Lt. Gov. S.B. Woo’s 19,624 votes, or 47%. Nine small precincts were not expected to report their
results until Monday, but Woo conceded Saturday night. Beard faces Sen. William V. Roth Jr. in the November general election. Roth, who did not have a primary opponent, is seeking a fourth
term. The votes represented a little more than a 30% turnout of Democrats eligible to vote. MORE TO READ
