I agree with everything George Skelton and Leo Wolinsky said about the Legislature (“Resistance to Reforms in Capitol,” Part I, Oct. 10). It has become a mine field for ethics and public
policy. It used to be a much better place. Under the leadership of (former Assembly Speaker) Bob Moretti and Leo McCarthy, it did many worthwhile things. The current leaders, Republicans and
Democarts, are obsessed with raising money. Day in, day out. Month in, month out. This is their quest. They don’t have the time (or inclination) to consider the ramifications of this on
public policy. The members of the Legislature seem focused on two things: raising money for the next campaign and making one’s seat as safe as possible during the next redistricting. These
goals do not have a public policy purpose, nor do they promote constituent well-being. They are simply forms of self-aggrandizement. ERIC STEEL Oakland MORE TO READ
