JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — A cockpit voice recorder that may give clues to the 1987 crash of a South African airliner was found Friday on the bottom of the Indian Ocean, the government
announced. The recorder was recovered by a remote-controlled mini-submarine at a depth of 13,000 feet about 110 miles northeast of the island of Mauritius. A multimillion-dollar search for
wreckage has been conducted with robot equipment scanning the seabed. The South African Airways Boeing 747, on a flight from Taiwan, crashed Nov. 28, 1987, shortly before it was to land at
Mauritius en route to Johannesburg. All 159 aboard were killed. The cause of the crash, which occurred after the pilot reported smoke in the cabin, has not been determined. MORE TO READ
