* As urbanization engulfs us, Friendship Park in San Pedro/Rancho Palos Verdes and 53-acre Shoreline Park in Rancho Palos Verdes have remained beautifully natural oases. This is, apparently,
about to change. At a time when it is nearly broke, L.A. County plans to sell Shoreline Park to developers and to spend $4 million to build a 6,600-square-foot Deane Dana Nature Center in
the middle of Friendship Park. When I voted for Prop. A, I thought I had voted for parkland acquisition and maintenance. Instead I am distressed to see parkland for sale and parkland
destruction. Prop. A funds could be better spent refurbishing existing structures, maintaining existing trails, re-vegetating Friendship Park with native plants to preserve natural habitat
and by formalizing Shoreline Park to save it from development. Furthermore, during fiscal crises, parkland is cheaper to maintain than facilities. FAY WOODRUFF San Pedro MORE TO READ
