Society should, presumably, owe the Kaczynski family something for coming forth with information that led to Theodore Kaczynski’s apprehension. It would seem that a death sentence would be
poor compensation for what was likely a difficult decision. Further, future disclosures under similar circumstances could be threatened with compromise, producing, potentially, more deaths
of innocent people. One may wonder if the Justice Department has thought this matter through, completely. It would be unfortunate if intransigence were to be paid for in the coin of demises
yet to be. Perhaps citizens might be polled on the problem. In a democratic culture, finality has, most times, been treated with serious and thoughtful consideration. LIONEL DICHTER Granada
Hills * After reading Mike Farrell’s Jan. 15 Column Left, I wondered how many brains warped and scarred by Farrell’s illogic it would take to equal the three deaths that Kaczynski is alleged
to have caused. If convicted, Kaczynski gave up his right to live with the rest of us and his voice deserves to be silenced just as he silenced his victims--period. BYRON C. LEWIN Visalia
