Recent acquisitions Since its beginnings, donators, collectors and artists have been essential factors in the Museum’s growth. The backbone of the present collection is the result of an
exceptional legacy of more than 500 works from Doctor Maurice Girardin in 1953, which included a core of Fauvist paintings, a large number of Cubist works, and many works by members of the
Paris School (École de Paris). The arrival of this bequest was a determining factor for the Parisian authorities in their decision to leave the confines of the now too small Petit Palais and
to open a dedicated venue in the Palais de Tokyo.
Since 2007, more than 800 works have been donated. This has been a considerable boost to the Museum’s collections, which now boast 10,000 works. The Museum has also acquired more than 200
works thanks to a dynamic policy of sponsorship on the part of the Friends of the Museum (Société des Amis du musée), which is an invaluable addition to the budget allocated to the Museum by
the City of Paris.
