ALDI WAS QUICK TO MAKE A DIG AT THE RETAILER FOR SCRAPPING ITS SCHEME AFTER JUST 12 MONTHS 07:30, 01 Feb 2025Updated 09:22, 01 Feb 2025 A supermarket which has scrapped its Aldi and Lidl

Price Match scheme is working out cheaper than them both for a basket of shopping essentials. Asda revealed earlier this week that it was bringing the scheme to an end after just 12 months,

saying it's focusing on its 'own great Asda Prices not competitor comparisons'. Aldi was quick to jump on the announcement, making a joke out of it on social media. But it

seems the decision to scrap the scheme hasn't harmed its prices, as this week it's working out cheaper than both retailers in our price comparison for the fifth week running. In

fact it's cheaper than all the supermarkets, with its bill for the basket of essentials - including tea bags, coffee, bread, butter, milk, beans, chicken and mince - coming to £12.58.

Article continues below It's not without a price rise though and indeed four out of the six main supermarkets have gone up in price this week. Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's have

all hiked the price of their cheapest mince, with Sainsbury's now charging the most at £2.90 for a 500g pack. Meanwhile Tesco has increased the price of its cheapest Stockwell tea bags,

now charging 98p for a box of 80. At £12.65, Aldi is second cheapest in our survey, and the only one to decrease in price this week after shaving a penny of the price of its cheapest beans.

In third place is Lidl at £12.77, followed by Morrisons at £13.03 and Sainsbury's at £13.13. Tesco is most expensive for the eighth consecutive week, with a bill of £13.34. Aldi has

always argued that our comparison doesn't take into account the difference in quality, insisting that its own Diplomat Red Label tea bags and its coffee are 'higher quality'

than the comparative products used and its tins of beans are heavier than some of the others. When it comes to meat however, our comparison includes the cheapest packs of mince from each

place and at Aldi and Lidl, along with Morrisons, it's a 25% fat pack, whereas the others sell 20% fat, which is seen as better quality. An Aldi spokesperson said: “Our promise to

customers is that they will make significant savings every time they shop with Aldi, which is why we’ve been named Which? Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for four years running. Which? also

named Aldi the UK’s Cheapest Supermarket every month in 2024.” Asda also disagrees with our comparison and says that our small sample of products does not represent the fuller picture of

prices and does not account for its deals. The supermarket says that, across the board, its Just Essentials range is the largest and cheapest available, alongside Aldi's. Commenting on

the axing of its price match, an Asda spokesperson: "We're focussed on our own great Asda Prices not competitor comparisons. We’ve started 2025 as we mean to go on by cutting

prices on thousands of products and there’s much more to come with Rollback.” ASDA Loaf of white bread 800g - 47p Milk 2 pints - £1.20 Coffee 200g (2 x 100g) - £2 Teabags 160 (4 x 40-pack) -
