In September it will be 40 years since I started dental school, which is where my reflections about my experience as a woman in dentistry begin. In 1984, about 30% of my year group were
female; 50% in the years above and below. The first Women in Dentistry group had formed (rudely referred to as ‘Dykes in Dentistry' by at least one male student) and were making an
impact. One of their achievements was to establish maternity pay for NHS female dentists in practice, for which we can all be eternally grateful. Female dental students were high performers.
The only dental student who had achieved First Class Honours, 30 years or so before I entered dental school, was a woman, and the only student who achieved this after my time at dental
school was also a female. The two highest performers in Finals in my year, separated by only 1%, were women. This is a preview of subscription content, access via your institution ACCESS
