A man was attacked by a mob and a part of his house was set on fire in Jharkhand on Tuesday. The trigger was the discovery of the body of a dead cow outside his house in Beria Hatiatand
village in Giridih district’s Deori area. According to the police, a group of over 200-odd people (the _Hindustan Times_ reports 1000 people) attacked the house of Usman Ansari. In a
statement, Jharkhand police spokesperson and ADG (operations) RK Mullik said their men and officials braved the crowd and immediately rescued Ansari and his family members. Even the
intervention by the police did not quell the rage of the mob; they pelted stones at the police at they tried to take Ansari to the hospital. Mullil said 50 policemen were injured in the
process. “Police had to resort to lathi-charge and air firing to quell the mob so that the victim and his family could be saved,” Giridih superintendent of police Akhilesh B Variar told
_Hindustan Times._ Ansari is stable condition and has been shifted to a hospital in Dhanbad for better medical care. Over 200 security personnel, including senior officers are currently
deployed to ensure law and order. No one has been arrested so far, but the police say they will question people from the village.
