A new weight loss group aimed specifically at men was launched last week by NHS Bristol and Weight Watchers, the first of its kind in the South West. A new weight loss group aimed
specifically at men was launched last week by NHS Bristol and Weight Watchers, the first of its kind in the South West. All Bristol GP practices are participating in the scheme and are able
to refer patients with a body mass index of 28 or above to a 12-week weight management programme. Men may also self-refer themselves to the scheme. NHS Bristol weight management project
manager Loretta Ingram explained the rationale for setting up the new group. She said: “Many of the men who are referred by GPs have said that they would prefer a male only group, to be
around their peers for motivation because weight loss groups are normally female oriented. “We really wanted to tackle this gap.”
