this guy work in such diverse crowds. And the common thread is Jim being so vulnerable and earnest and so talented that he cracks everybody wide open. And there we are in the control room
watching the shoot. And time after time, you use the melody and the harmony and the lyrics and your own subtle theater to just get inside of everybody's feelings. Is there any kind of
genesis that you feel like you got to this truth telling mode? - Well, I tried to figure out songs that touched my heart and that were, you know, driven by my memories of Montana, like
"You're a Friend". I wrote that about some friends of mine that were in a band called the Mission Mountain Wood Band. And songs that I wrote about my family. And I tried to
make it diverse so it wouldn't be all one sound. I mean, I was really heavily influenced by John Denver. He was a hero. But, you know, to find my own voice and to find my own spirit in
these tunes, there's some diversity, you know. And I play the electric guitar and the banjo and the ukelele and the bass and the piano and... I wanted to find a way to present a little
bit of everything. And I'm constantly polishing. I have eight to 15 versions of something that I'm working on. And I'm constantly trying to cut, trying to make it simpler,
trying to get to the point a little quicker. And I'm constantly trying to figure out a new way to come up with a new sound. ♪ Sweet loving you got the rhythm and the rhyme ♪ ♪ And I get

♪ ♪ With you ♪ - You're the perfect case to make the point that music isn't something that you do, music is something that you are. And if you aren't doing it, you'd
still be it you'd just be miserable. But when you get to do it, you get to be full on Jim. - I think it just started when I was really little that there was a lot of music in my home
and music at church and music... I went to a preschool for kids that liked music. And I learned about whole notes in Oreo cookies, you know? I think there's just something that's
been in my heart ever since I was little that loves music and then to get to do it and then to get to figure out a way to do it for a living and then to get to figure out a way to do it for
a living for a long time and to continue to do it even after you don't really necessarily have to do it. There's a joy and a love about performing. And there's a joy and a
love about connecting. And it's really cool to get to play for 20,000 people with Dolly Parton. There's just no doubt about it. But it's just as much fun to play for 200
people at the Gallatin Riverhouse. There's nothing better, I think, than playing at Roadhouse Saloon and making people happy. When the chips are down or the batteries need charge or
I'm feeling low, all I need to do is get the guitar out and find someone to play for or write a song, capture a feeling, capture an emotion. And if I can capture it or if I can make
somebody else feel an emotion from what I'm doing, there's nothing better. There's no better feeling in the world. (gentle music) ♪ I've been down Looking down my
