Two hundred and thirty five private schools in Karnataka have received no applications for seats under the Right to Education (RTE) Act for the 2015-2016 academic year, states a report by
The New Indian Express. 10,000 seats across the state thus are unclaimed. According to the report, officials say that several schools lack basic amenities and infrastructure and that this is
the reason why parents do not want to enroll their children in these schools. An official told the newspaper, “The first reason is that the schools have poor infrastructure, and the second
reason is that parents are attracted by government school incentives, such as free uniforms, textbooks, milk and mid-day meals."Of the 235 private schools in the state, where RTE seats
lie unclaimed, 191 are in North Karnataka districts.
