A youth wing meeting organised by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s (DMK) Kallakurichi South district unit in Tirukoilur has sparked criticism after visuals of beer bottles being served at the

venue went viral on social media.

The meeting was held on Sunday, April 27, at a private hall in Sandaipettai and was attended by booth organisers and deputy organisers from various unions in Tirukoilur, Kallakurichi

district.

Rishivandiyam MLA and DMK Kallakurichi South district secretary Vasantham K Karthikeyan, along with other constituency in-charges, was present to review preparations for the upcoming 2026

Assembly elections.

After the meeting concluded, a non-vegetarian feast was arranged for over 700 organisers. Beer bottles were allegedly served alongside the food, with three union-level functionaries

reportedly organising the meal.

Videos circulating on social media show beer bottles placed next to food plates, with youth cadres posing with them. Many users criticised the gathering, questioning the DMK's stand on

alcohol prohibition and referring to DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi’s earlier remark that “liquor is spoiling many families.”

In March 2016, Kanimozhi said, “Tamil Nadu has become a state with the most number of young widows in India because of alcoholism. It not only killed many youths but also killed the skills

of several youngsters and rendered them unsuitable for any job.”

However, in January 2023, Kanimozhi said, “We did not say in the election manifesto that we would bring prohibition in Tamil Nadu. The DMK's promise is that the number of liquor shops will

be reduced gradually.”
