Delhi Police on Monday, 18 November, used force against JNU students while they were taking out a protest march to Parliament against hostel fee hikes and other restrictive rules. Police
attempted to stop their march using barricades, leading to clashes. Traffic was paralysed in the city as thousands of students marched towards Parliament on the first day of Winter Session.
Police also clashed with students outside Safdarjung tomb near Jor Bagh. While the students alleged that they were lathi-charged by police after street lights were turned off, top police
officials denied having used any force.
According to the police, around 30 police personnel and 15 students were injured during the protests, in which thousands of students participated from different universities across the
national capital. However students confirm at least a hundred students were injured in the clashes. The students have been protesting for nearly three weeks against the draft hostel manual,
which has provisions for a steep hostel fee hike, a ‘regressive’ dress code and restrictive curfew timings.
