ST. IGNACE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Mackinac Bridge was shut down for a portion of the day Sunday following a bomb threat.

At around 2:30 p.m., motorists were told to stay away from the bridge. Boat activity below the bridge was suspended and some nearby tourist areas were evacuated.

Someone reportedly called Chippewa County Central Dispatch and said they planted a bomb underneath the bridge at the south end. The suspect said he was in a car at a nearby gas station. But

the police could not find a car matching the description. Investigators say nothing was found after an extensive search.

The bridge re-opened just after 5:00 p.m after it was determined that there was no longer a threat. But traffic was backed up for several miles in both directions while the scene was being

investigated by Michigan State Police and the Coast Guard.
